Featured Speakers: Rena Palloff and Keith Pratt

Rena M. Palloff , Ph.D., LCSW
Rena has been working extensively in health care, academic settings, and addiction treatment for the last 20 years. She consults to community groups interested in systems change and results-based accountability and to addiction treatment programs in the areas of program development, marketing, and the development of service delivery systems that are sensitive to the managed care environment. Rena is core faculty at Capella University in the School of Education and the Fielding Graduate Institute, teaching in their completely online masters' degree program in Organizational Management. Additionally, she has taught classes on organizational behavior and management and leadership on an adjunct basis for the International Studies Program at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas in various sites throughout the Pacific Rim. Rena received a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Development and a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems from The Fielding Institute.

Keith Pratt , Ph.D.
Keith began his government career as a Computer Systems Technician with the Air Force in 1967. After leaving the Air Force, Keith held positions as Registrar and Faculty (Charter College), Director Chapman College, and Trainer and Consultant (The Growth Company). Keith was an Assistant Professor in the International Studies Program and the Chair of the Management Information Systems Program, main campus and overseas, at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas. He most recently served as Senior Project Manager for Datatel, working with community colleges on the West Coast. Keith is also core faculty at Capella University and teaches at The Fielding Graduate Institute Keith graduated from Wayland Baptist University with a dual degree in Business Administration and Computer Systems Technology. He has a Master of Science Degree in Human Resource Management (with honors) from Chapman University. He holds a Masters Degree in Organizational Development and a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems from The Fielding Institute and an honorary Doctorate of Science in Economics from Moscow State University.

Shelley Ann Bacon, Teacher, AE21 Distributed Education

Shelley Bacon is World History Humanities Teacher with AE21. Before joining their staff in 2001, she taught junior academy and spent 20 years raising four children. She lives in Colville, Washington.

Marsha Beal, Director, The Center for Distance Learning and Instructional Technology, Andrews University

Marsha and her husband John are parents of “two” children. The first is a two-legged 2 ½ year old daughter (Karyl) who was born in China . The second is a four-legged 7 year old (Chloe) Norwegian Elkhound. They live in Berrien Center , Michigan . Marsha has been teaching Interpersonal Communication and Speech Communication courses since 1999. Then, in September of 2003, she was asked to direct the Center for Distance Learning and Instructional Technology ( DLiT) at Andrews University that includes WebCT administration. In her short tenure with the DLiT, Marsha has obtained a passion for assisting others in their quest for an Andrews education no matter where they live.

Jerry Chi, Associate professor and MBA program professor, Southwestern Adventist University

Jerry Chi currently is serving Southwestern Adventist University Business Administration Department as an associate professor. He acquired his MBA and Ph.D. in Leadership from Andrews University and second Ph.D. from Illinois State University  with major in statistics and research evaluation and minor in computer science.   He is the founder of Southwestern e-Learning System. Currently, he is pursuing his third Ph.D. in e-Commerce from University of North Texas .  He is also a SIFE program director. Since 1997, he has been actively leading SWAU students to conduct numerous community service projects and has won many regional championships.   

Rosemary Dibben, Director, Pacific Union College Learning Resource Center

Currently the director of PUC's Learning Resource Center and coordinator for PUC CyberCourses, Rosemary is moving to PUC Prep School for next school year to teach English.

Marilyn Eggers, Associate Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, La Sierra University

Marilyn just finished a grant-funded position as North American Division (Seventh-day Adventist education system for the U.S. and Canada) Distance Education Coordinator. Before that position, she worked as the Advancing Technology in Education (ATIE) Director for the Pacific Union Conference. Marilyn has a Ph.D. in Leadership from Andrews University and is an AVLN board member. She recently co-edited a special issue of the Journal of Adventist Education on distance education issues.

Marilyn loves to grow beautiful flowers in her yard and loves walking on the beach. She has a wonderful family: a great husband and two super children, a great son-in-law, and a beautiful new grandson!

Shirley Freed, Professor, Andrews University

Shirley Freed, Ph.D., is Professor of Leadership and Qualitative Research in the School of Education at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan, where she currently teaches all of her classes online.

Colin Hill, Director of Computer Services, Canadian University College

Colin Hill has been working with computers in education since the early 80's. A current AVLN Board member, he also serves on the NAD Technology and Distance Education Committee ( www.nadtdec.org ).  With classroom teaching experience at both the high school and college level, he is currently employed as Director of Computer services at Canadian University College, where the search for an affordable quality distance education platform has resulted in the implementation of MOODLE ( www.moodle.org ).  This session will review where MOODLE fits in comparrison to other platforms, show its basic functionality and features, and hopefully inspire you with what can be done for institutions on a limited budget

David Jeffrey, Business Dept. Head, Crawford Adventist Academy

David Jeffrey teaches business and information technology at Crawford Adventist Academy in Toronto. He enjoys combining business education with computer technology and counts it a privilege to teach in a computer lab every day. David has taken and later co-taught Active Online Learning/Teaching. David is an active fan of online communication, and can often be found moderating conversation in the Seventh-day Adventist chat room on Microsoft Chats. David and his laptop are rarely parted.

Janine Lim, Instructional Technology Consultant, Berrien County Intermediate School District, Berrien Springs, MI.

Janine Lim has worked as Instructional Technology Consultant at the Berrien County Intermediate School District for the past 6 years and was just elected President of TWICE, Michigan's K-12 videoconferencing distance learning association. She coordinates distance learning which includes video conferencing and online courses for 18 public school districts and many private school in Berrien and Cass counties in southwest Michigan. Janine writes a regular column for the Journal of Adventist Education and for the MACUL Newsletter. Janine has served on the board of AVLN since 2000. She coordinates the AVLN online courses and maintains the AVLN web site. Janine is also webmaster for Pioneer Memorial Church, on the campus of Andrews University.

James Thomas McDuffie IV

Born into a family of computer guru's James has had the opportunity to explore all sides of the computing world. He excels at many different sides of the field including, but not limited to computer gaming, graphical art and 3d animation, web design and layout, network file systems, network topology, server maintenance, UNIX, Linux, Win 9x / nt / xp, MS office tools, etc. Barely being able to remember back into a time without computers, he has fond memories of his Commodore 64 and the original Pac Man game. He is a fond believer in physical fitness; swimming and playing water polo four or more days a week. He also has an affinity for heights, enjoying the sport of rock climbing to soaring altitudes of 1200 or more feet above the ground, and he also tries to make his yearly trip to some Caribbean get away for deep excursions into the depths of the ocean with S.C.U.B.A. He is currently attending Pacific Union College with less than a year remaining to finish his B.S. of Computer Science.

Trevor Murtagh

Bob Paulson, Assistant Professor, Pacific Union College

Bob Paulson is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science, Health, and Nutrition at Pacific Union College in Angwin, California. He is currently working on a Ph.D. in leadership at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, with an emphasis in Web-based education. Mr. Paulson's claim to fame on the Internet is that he teaches probably the world's only Web-based, for-college-credit exercise class, "Cyber Jogging."

Courtney Pindling, Adjunct Professor of Mathematics, State University of New York

I am an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at the State University of New York at New Paltz and an Advisory Industrial Engineer at IBM Corp. I have been teaching, math, science and engineering for over 20 years in both industry and academia.

Randy J. Siebold, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, Andrews University

Randy and his wife Brenda (originally from Lansing, Michigan ) are parents of five growing children—Jill (19), Lorraine (17), Jayson (14), Kristina (12), and their newly adopted son, Fredy (2)—and live in Berrien Springs, Michigan. With backgrounds in Math, Engineering, Industrial Education, Art and Photography, Randy has taught in both the secondary and college levels as well as working with his wife in home schooling their children. He has had the opportunity to work with NCTM (the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) on the electronic version of, what became known as, Standards 2000 and currently works with faculty from kindergarten to college on curriculum (both program and course level) design and development with a special emphasis on online delivery. He has consulted and presented both nationally and internationally in online course design, support and training. Working with Adventist educators from around the world he hopes to contribute to a continued refining of what is already impressive educational system.

Jorge O. Trisca Content Designer, Department of Education, Montemorelos University

Jorge has been a primary education teacher, a professor of Filosofía and Pedagogy, and a professor of sciences of the education and master in education with specialty in Orientación Vocacional (Adventista del Plata, University, Argentine). Now at Montemorelos University, he designs online content for the department of education. Among other things, he teaches "Computers in Education" in Montemorelos and in Linda Vista, University (Chiapas, México).

Clifford Walters, M.D., EMBA; Loma Linda University

Dr. Walters is the Director for the Graduate Medical Education Core Curriculum Program of Loma Linda University. Dr. Walters is also Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology. As a gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist, he has practiced both in a University practice as well as private practice for total of 28 years.

Dr. Walters' passion is for teaching and creating new and better environments for student learning. His desire is to move away from the traditional "shame-based" model of learning to the "inspirational" model of learning while holding academic standards high. He sees online learning as the future of learning for a large population base that might not otherwise enjoy collegiate or university degree possibilities. He currently directs the first fully online learning program for nearly 500 resident physicians who are to master 150 hours of material over three years.
