Saving and Creating New Pages
Unlike a word processor, each web page is a separate file. So each page must be saved separately.
If you are publishing your pages to your own account (which we are doing in this class), your first page must be called index.htm or index.html. Go back to the introductory page if you need to review this. Other pages should end in .htm or .html and use lowercase and have a length of 8 characters or less.
Also remember the difference between the filename and the title of your web page. The filename is 8 characters or less and ends in .htm or .html. The title is spelled and capitalized appropriately, can include spaces, and shows up when someone bookmarks your page. Go back to the introductory page if you need to review this.
Unlike other programs, PageMill will not remind you to put a title on your page. It is very important to do so. How many of you have ever bookmarked a page and the bookmark said "Untitled"? That is because someone created the page and forgot to give it a title. In PageMill, above the page creation space, you'll see a bar that says Title:
The example above is the default. Always CHANGE this to something descriptive of your page. Click in the box to write a descriptive title for your page. Remember this is NOT the filename. This title is displayed at the top of the window when viewing the page and is also used when a person bookmarks your page. Type a title such as "Welcome to Janine Lim's Home on the Web."
Then save your file.
To Save Your File
From the menu, choose File, Save Page As...
Name the file index.htm (Do not keep the long filename it creates.)Note to Mac users: Be sure to put the .htm at the end of the file!
Make sure the file will be saved to your disk or web page folder (NOT in the image folder).
Click Save.To Create Another Page
From the menu, choose File, New Page.
Type as needed.
Save the file as mentioned above with a name 8 characters or less ending in .htm
(i.e. page2.htm)
