Creating Links
Switch back to Composer and make sure that you have created at least two pages. We will be making a link from one page to the other. Also be sure you understand the different ways to preview from the previous lesson.
Links to Your Pages
NOTE: It is VERY important that you save all your pages in the same place. In our case, save them all to the disk (NOT inside the images folder). If you don't save them in the same place, the links will not work when you transfer the files or publish your page.To Create a Link to Another Page (that you created)
Type a description of the new page (i.e. "More About Me")
Highlight or select the text
Click on the Link button, Choose File...
Or, from the menu, choose Insert, Link.
Choose the file you want linked.
Close the box.
If you de-select the text, it should be blue and underlined (unless you changed the default colors)Switch back to Composer and create a link from one page to another. Remember the ways to preview your page. When checking links to pages you have created, use the
Preview button. Once you know your link works, close the Netscape Navigator window to go back to edit mode and make a link on the second page back to your first page.
To Create a Link to Another Web Site by Typing the Address (URL)
Type a description of the site (i.e. "Yahoo")
Highlight or select the text
Click on the Link button
or Insert, LinkYou will see the following Link box.
Type the URL of the site: http://www.yahoo.com
Close the Link box.To Create a Link to Another Web Site by Copying and Pasting the Address (URL)
You should be thinking by now that there must be an easier way that typing in the URL or address of the web page. There is! In fact, this is a better way to do it. It is very easy to type URLs incorrectly, so this method is useful because you can know for sure that you have the correct URL.Open Netscape and go to the web site
Highlight or select the URL in the Location box
Press Ctrl+C to copy. (Command C on the MAC)
(It will seem like nothing happened - it just copied the address to the clipboard).
Go back to ComposerType a description of the site (i.e. "Metacrawler")
Highlight or select the text
Click on the Link button
or Insert, LinkInstead of typing the URL, press Ctrl+V to paste the URL. (Command V on the MAC).
Note: there is a third way to make a link - by dragging the link from Netscape Navigator to Composer. I've written out the instructions for PageMill - it's the same in Composer. If you feel really comfortable resizing and dragging windows on your screen, you may want to try out these instructions. You'll have to click BACK on your browser to get back to this page when you're done.
