Switching Between Two Programs

When editing and creating web pages, you need to make sure you know how to switch between Netscape and your web editor. If you already know, you can skip this page.

In Windows 95/98, on the bottom of your screen, you'll see the Task Bar. For example, here's a snapshot of mine as I'm working on this project:

On the left, you can see the Start menu. Use this to open another program, for example, your web editor.

To switch between programs, click on the program title on the Task Bar. For example, in my example, you can see that I have open the following programs: Microsoft Word, Adobe PageMill, Netscape, WS-FTP (a file transfer program), and Day Timer, my calendaring program.

Try opening another program and switch between them.

If you're on a Mac, on the top right hand corner of the screen you'll see a small icon. It changes depending on what program you're in at the moment. Right now, since you're reading this online, you should see the Netscape icon in the top right hand corner.

You can have more than one program open at a time, but only one program can be active (or at the front of the screen) at a time.

If you click on the Application Menu, you'll see the programs you have open. The active program (in this case Netscape) has a check by its name. You can use this menu to switch between programs.

Click on the Application Menu, drag down to the new program, and let go. This will bring the new program to the front and make it active.

Try it and see how it works.

Switching between programs is a very useful skill, so it is good to learn it.
