Adding a Matching Question
Write the Question
- Under Manage Questions, select Add new question to database.
- From the drop-down list, select the category to which the question will be added, and click Go. The question screen for your selected question type appears. Note: if you were viewing a specific category of question before you began to add this question, the drop-down box will default to that category, automatically.
- In the Title text box, type the title of the question . Note: this is optional.
- In the Question text box, type the text of the question . Note: the student sees this text in the quiz or
survey.
- Under Settings, select the marking scheme for the matching question:
- Equally weighted: the total points for the questions are allocated equally amongst all of the correct answers. There is no penalty for an incorrect answer. A student's total points for the question will be calculated from the number of correct answers. For example, if a question is worth 20 points, with four question and answer pairs, a student with three correct answers would be awarded 15 points.
- All or nothing: the student must match all of the question and answer pairs correctly to receive the full point allocation for the question. If any of the answers is incorrect then the student receives zero points for the question.
- Right less wrong: if a student answers any question incorrectly, then the points for that answer are subtracted from the total points awarded for the question. For example, if a question is worth 30 points, with three question and answer pairs, a student with two questions correct and one question incorrect would be awarded 10 points (20 - 10).
- Select Preview columns to determine whether you want the student to see the full set of matching
questions and answers that WebCT has generated. If you select Yes, the question and answer pairs
appear above the student's selection options in the quiz. Note: Yes must be selected for long answer formats (see Matching answer formats, for more information).Write Answers
- Under Matching pairs, type your questions and answer pairs into the text boxes. Note: five pairs are provided; if you need more, click More Answers. Two more pairs are provided each time you click More Answers.
To specify matching question and answer pairs
- Matching questions require students to match up items from one column with items in a second column. For example you may want them to match paintings with artists by showing the images in the first column, and a list of artists in the second. Use the question and answer pair definitions to specify how you want the matching pairs to be presented. The first column appears to the student in the order that you specify them. The second column appears as a series of drop-down boxes containing the possible answers. If you choose Long Answer format in column one, then these appear as numbers to the student. If you choose Long Answer format for the second column, then these appear as letters to the student. Note: if you want to increase the difficulty of the question, you can specify items to have no match by specifying
more items in one column than the other.
- Short answers: these are usually single words or short phrases
- Long answers: these are answers that require more text than a short answer. Note: when you select this format, the answer text box increases in size.
