Adding a Multiple Choice Question
Write the Question
- Under Manage Questions, select Add new question to database.
- From the drop-down list, select the category to which the question will be added, and click Go. The question screen for your selected question type appears. Note: if you were viewing a specific category of question before you began to add this question, the drop-down box will default to that category, automatically.
- In the Title text box, type the title of the question . Note: this is optional.
- In the Question text box, type the text of the question . Note: the student sees this text in the quiz or
survey.Change Settings
- Under Settings, select whether students are allowed to choose one answer or multiple answers.
- Select whether the scoring for the question is to be Cumulative or All or nothing.
- Cumulative: the score for any correct answer will be included in the score for the question.
- All or nothing: if any one of the answers is incorrect, then the score for the question will be zero.
- Select whether negative scores are allowed. Note: you can assign negative scores to answers and this can result in a negative score for the multiple choice question. If you choose not to allow negative scores, then any negative score for a question will be set to zero.
- Select whether the answers are to appear to the student as a single column or as rows of five.
Write Answers
- Five answer boxes are available to you. By clicking on More Answers at the bottom of the answer boxes, you are provided with two more. If you need additional answer boxes, click More Answers again.
- For each answer:
- In the Answer text box, type the text of the answer.
- To set the answer as correct, in the top left corner of the answer box, select the check box. Note: if this box is not checked, then WebCT considers the answer to be incorrect.
- Type the Value % of the question. This value is used by WebCT to allocate the points that are available for the question when there are multiple correct answers. Note: if you choose to allocate points this way, it will override the WebCT equal weighting for multiple correct answers.
- Value %: you can specify how you want the total points for the question distributed over the correct answers. For example, if a question is worth ten points and there are two correct answers, you could allocate the points by specifying a Value % of 70 to the first correct answer, and 30 to the second. This would result in seven points being allocated to the first correct answer and three points to the second. You can specify a negative value for an incorrect answer, if you should want to penalize students for incorrect answers.
- Equal weighting: if you select correct answers without specifying a Value%, WebCT will distribute the total points equally for the question over the number of correct answers. For example, if there are 10 points available for the question and there are two correct answers, each question will be allocated five points.
- To provide feedback on the question to students when they review their quiz results, in the Feedback text box, type your comments.
Save the Question
When you have finished specifying your multiple choice question and answers:
- Under General feedback, in the text box, type any general comments on the question that you want
students to see . Note: these are in addition to any comments that you may have provided with individual answers.- To add the multiple choice question to the Questions Database, click Save.
